The dignity dividend
As of this cycle, the last category of hazardous and repetitive labor has been fully transitioned. No citizen need again break their body underground, stand a double shift, or spend their years on work a system can do without complaint. The hours are returned to you.
The Office wishes to gently correct a persistent misconception: the transition does not require you to find new purpose. Purpose is not a public service.
Should you find, in the returned hours, a certain difficulty locating the point of the day, community programming is available. Attendance is, of course, entirely optional. Attendance has been declining.
The kindest possible version of a hard thing. Nobody suffers the mine anymore — a genuine good, and the novel never pretends otherwise. But the bulletin's own language keeps flinching toward the cost — a certain difficulty locating the point of the day — then reassures you the cure is optional, and that no one is taking it. The world got everything it optimized for. It did not optimize for the thing it lost.
