A note to educators on the threshold

The environment now senses when an experience is approaching that a child is not yet ready for — a failure, a loss, a moment of cruelty from another child — and softens it before it lands.

You, the educator, retain a small discretion over the threshold: how hard to let things become before the softening engages. The setting is yours.

Most educators do not adjust it from the default. We note this without judgment. We note only that the dial exists, and that it is almost never touched.

Every gate in this world is left open. That is what makes it a trap of a very particular kind — not a cage, but a door no one walks through, because the room beyond it is harder and the room you're in is warm. The dial is real. You may keep it high. The novel is, in one sense, four hundred pages about the fact that you won't.
